Project Zomboid is a third-person game where you try and survive the zombie apocalypse. The game takes on simplistic graphics mainly focusing on the gameplay mechanics and interactions with objects and creatures. The game’s layout and movement kind of resemble the early Fallout games that I’ve played but without the turn-based mechanic. This game puts you into a stressful environment where you have to constantly run and fight to survive. In this post, I will be going over my playthrough of Project Zomboid, and discussing some tips I’ve learned while playing the game.
Creator creation

When It comes to creating your creator it’s important to think about what traits you want your character to inherit, these traits could be positive or negative, Along with the career that you want your character to have since this will determine what skills you have before starting the game. Depending on the limit of your trait points that you have set as default before starting the game you might have to make some sacrifices. But to counteract the amount of points that you have you could also pick negative traits to increase your number of points to get more positive traits.
Character Careers
The career that you pick for your character during character creation could greatly influence how far you can make it in the game and could even give you a head start in creating a safe house. The career that I always pick before starting the game is burglar and mechanic. This is mainly because these two careers help best when trying to get a car to traverse the map. Other careers that you can choose from include: Fire Officer, Police Officer, Park Ranger, Construction Worker, Security Guard, Carpenter, Chief, DIY Expert, Livestock Farmer, Crop Farm, Angular, Doctor, Veteran, Nurse, Lumberjack, Fitness Instructor, Electrician, Engineer, Wielder, and Blacksmith.
My Character
For my character for my new run of the game, I decided to go with the Burglar career, which has the skills of fitness, light-footed, nimble sneaking, and strength. The traits that I picked to go with the career were first aider, claustrophobic, Pacifist, and slow reader. Most of the traits picked are negative because they were used as a trade-off to pick the burglar career. But overall with these traits and skills, it’s easier to not get detected by zombies and also to get a car to traverse the map. The light-footed and sneaking skills make it harder for the zombies to detect you as you’re looting moving from house to house. The Burglar career gives you the ability to hotwire a car, so cars that are already in good condition can be driven without any need for the keys.
How to get supplies?
There are many ways to get supplies in Project Zomboid, some of which include killing zombies, and looting buildings, and cars depending on what you want to get. For food supplies I recommend looking in stores or kitchens in houses, For medical supplies I would recommend looting hospitals or bathrooms in houses, and for weapons and equipment, I would recommend killing zombies of policemen or firefighters because they are highly likely to drop armor and weapons that could defend against bites. You can also loot police and fire stations for even more equipment.
Tips
As I was playing the game I found that the best way to survive is by setting up a base to settle down and store supplies and valuables. Getting a car as soon as possible would be your best bet to get to some of the good houses without worry of getting attacked by a swarm with no way of escape. I recommend making a base at a house with a sturdy tall gate, in this way zombies wouldn’t be able to climb over them or break them down. This also leads to there only being mostly one entryway in which they could come in making the base easier to defend. With a base set, you will now be able to have a place to store all your supplies and also a safe place where you can make repairs to your vehicle if needed, resulting in a base being the most crucial tip in surviving in the game.
Overall

I enjoyed playing Project Zomboid and think that the mods that I’ve played with make the game even more enjoyable, One of which being the OnlyOneCure mod which allows the player to cut off a limb when they are bitten by a zombie. This mod leads to some interesting banter between the players when one of them in the group is bitten. The game has the perfect amount of stress to make the game exciting, I would highly recommend those who haven’t played to check the game out.
